The Mysterious Clam Chair, Whose Design It Is?
While the soft lambskin or upholstered seat rests on a solid oak frame making the iconic Clam Chair the perfect bedroom lounge chair, this distinctive chair that dates back to the 1940s is mysterious, as its designer has remained unknown for many years.
Initially, the Clam Chair was thought to be the design of Danish designer/architect Viggo Boesen, due to the similarities in the shape of the Clam Chair to Boesen's designs such as the Little Petra Lounge Chair.

Later, the National Museum in Oslo showed evidence that the chair was designed by Norwegian designer "Martin Olsen" and produced by VIK & BLINDHEIM, but it was later confirmed that "Martin Olsen" was actually the name of a closed furniture store in Oslo .
It wasn't until 2013 that Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen decided to track down the origins of the Clam Chair.
Anne Sofie, the granddaughter of Philip Arctander, got in touch with Philips' friend and former co-worker, Poul Erik Skriver, a Danish architect and editor of Arkitekten magazine, who confirmed that the Clam Chair was actually designed by Phillip Arctander in 1944, after which the listing for the Clam Chair at auction was changed to: "Phillip Arctander: Clam Chair, designed in 1944. Made by Nordisk Staal & Møbel Central in the late 1940s."
It took more than half a century before Philip Arctander is generally credited as the designer of the Clam Chair (also known as the Arctander Chair today), but could there be a twist regarding the designer of this mysterious Clam Lounge Chair in the future?
